It is written, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV). But how many of us really understand what it means to have a sound mind according to scripture? Growing up I have heard the use of this scripture in bible studies, but none was able to confirm or show example of this verse. Now that I am older and spending more time with Jesus, the secrets of his word are being revealed to me day after day, and what I have come to discover about this verse is quite amazing.
As Children of God, we are passed from death to life in Jesus, but because of what he did on the cross. If you are a Christian this message is not new to you; however, understanding the mind of Jesus and what led him to the cross may have been a mystery. As Christians we read and saw in the scripture Christ‘s faithfulness, we saw his power to heal and bring people back from the dead, but what we may not have seen was the soundness in which he walked.
Most of us when we read the scripture, believe that Jesus was inventing his own way of doing things while one earth, what we did not realize was the blue print of his life. We thought that Jesus was going about doing the things he was doing on his own, even after he told us many times over that he came not in his own name, but in the name of the Father.
The sayings of Jesus was and is a mystery to many in his time, and today they are still a mystery to thousands, but as we look into the word of God we will be able to identify the blue print of his life, and the soundness in which he walked. As we look closely at his life we will come to the realization and understanding of what it means to be sober in God’s word, and to have a sound mind.
For most of us having a sound mind means to be sane or mentally balance, but having this concept leave out the importance of the scripture. In the view of scripture it means not to be mentally balance, but to be conscious of God’s word that we might fulfill them with precision.
The bible told us that God’s word will not return unto him void, and having that promise, we as the people of God are living with the expectation that God will remain faithful to his word. But in-order for God to fulfill his word, he will need to perform them because there was no one on earth who could have bring to pass what he had spoken, and in-order that he might fulfill his word, God sent Jesus the word of God into the world that he might manifest his word to his glory.
Jesus knowing he was sent by God walked with soundness of mind, having before him always the word and mission of God. The blue print of Jesus’s life was the word of God. In all his life Jesus did not turn from the word of God, but came in the form of man that he might fulfill the word of God with precision. Knowing these things Jesus did specific things in-order that the scripture might be fulfilled. One of those things he did was to ask for a drink while on the cross that the scripture which was written of him might come to pass, and with that fulfilled the atonement and word of God.
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (John 19:28-30 KJV)
As it was written, just before his death he was to be given vinegar as a drink, after which he was to give us the ghost, so did Jesus in fulfillment of the scripture, he lived soundly, and soberly fulfilling God’s word.
“Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (Psalms 69:20-21 KJV)
Jesus knowing that the scripture of himself was to be fulfilled, consciously, soberly, and soundly having his mind set on God’s word asked for a drink in fulfillment of the scripture, his message to us is that we are to come into the knowledge of God’s word, and living soberly with a sound mind we are to execute the word of God fulfilling God’s word in Jesus Christ.
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:15-18 KJV)
